The port of Jounieh officially reopened on Tuesday, positioning itself as part of a wider network of tourism ports across the Middle East in a move officials and business leaders said could help revive Lebanon’s struggling economy.
At the inauguration ceremony, MP Neemat Frem underscored the importance of cooperation between the State and the private sector.
“Lebanon is living historic moments tied to its very existence and continuity. We stand hand in hand with the presidents of the republic and the government, for much is required of them. It is our duty to prove that Lebanon is a strong and enduring entity,” he said.
Frem also stressed that expanding the Jounieh highway was a vital infrastructure project that would improve traffic flows and connectivity nationwide.
Public Works Minister Fayez Rasamny hailed the port’s reopening as evidence of the effectiveness of public-private partnerships.
“This summer was highly successful. We formed a committee to rehabilitate the Jounieh road and to receive all complaints. The partnership between the public and private sectors has proven its effectiveness through the Jounieh Port project,” he said.
He added that if the private sector actively invests in the port, attracts tourists from Cyprus, and promotes package deals, the initiative could provide a much-needed boost to Lebanon’s economy.
The harbor, with a depth of 3.5 meters, is capable of receiving ferries carrying over 450 passengers, including those operating on the Jounieh–Larnaca, Cyprus route.
Plans for the “Grand Jounieh Port” envision a depth of 12.5 meters, making it possible to berth two cruise ships of up to 5,000 passengers each. While several cruise operators have shown interest, the project is still pending financial backing.
