A Bulgarian court has denied Lebanon’s request to extradite the owner of the ship linked to the 2020 Beirut port explosion, but approved a key judicial step that allows Lebanon’s lead investigator, Judge Tarek Bitar, to question the suspect on Bulgarian soil, according to information obtained by Voice of Lebanon.

Pope Leo XIV visited Lebanon this week, the third visit by a supreme pontiff to the country since John Paul II in 1997 and Benedict in 2012 (Pope Paul VI stopped very briefly in 1964, on his way to India). The fact that Lebanon is the site of the Pope’s first foreign visit (with Turkey) is significant. The country holds the highest percentage of Christians in the Arab world.

The Israeli justice ministry published a list of 95 Palestinian prisoners who are to be freed starting Sunday as part of the first exchange for Israeli captives under a Gaza ceasefire deal.
“The release of prisoners is... subject to government approval of the (ceasefire) plan and will not take place before Sunday 16:00 (1400 GMT),” the ministry said in a statement on Friday.
