Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon have killed dozens of Hezbollah fighters, captured a militant, and intensified strikes across the region, the military said on Tuesday, as fighting showed no signs of easing.

Israeli and American officials have signalled that such an operation is no longer hypothetical. If it happens, Lebanon will face destruction and displacement not seen in decades. For a country already battered by war and economic collapse, the stakes could hardly be higher.

The Biden Administration vetoed this approach, warning of potential regional or global escalation. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken appealed again Friday for a ceasefire in Lebanon as Israel ignored calls to stop strikes targeting Hezbollah.
"The most important thing to do through diplomacy is to try first to stop firing in both directions and then to use the time that we would have in such a ceasefire to see if we can reach a broader diplomatic agreement," Blinken told a news conference as he wrapped a week of U.N. diplomacy.
