Israel on Wednesday accused Hezbollah of committing a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire agreement between Tel Aviv and Lebanon after an explosive drone struck an unmanned Israeli engineering vehicle in southern Lebanon overnight, in what the military said was the first such incident since the framework agreement took effect in late June.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the drone hit an armored bulldozer operating in the Ali Taher Ridge area, inside what Israel describes as its buffer zone in southern Lebanon. No injuries were reported.

“This is a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon by the Hezbollah terrorist organization,” the military said in a statement.

Israeli security officials said the government is currently deliberating how to respond to what it considers a breach of the ceasefire arrangement.

According to the Israeli military, the attack marks the first drone strike attributed to Hezbollah since the framework agreement was reached between Israel and Lebanon late last month.

The military said Hezbollah maintains a large underground complex beneath Ali Taher Ridge, near the southern Lebanese city of Nabatiyeh, and estimates that dozens of Hezbollah operatives are currently sheltering in the tunnel network.

The IDF said that under the terms of the ceasefire agreement it is prevented from entering and seizing the underground passages beneath the ridge, despite its assessment of Hezbollah activity in the area.

Israeli forces “continue to operate in the ridge area and will not allow terrorists in the area to advance or carry out terror attacks against IDF troops,” the military said.
