Iran's acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani arrived in Beirut on Monday in his first international visit since taking on the role.
Kani met with Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain el-Tineh and Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati at the Grand Serail. He also held talks with his Lebanese counterpart, Abdallah Bou Habib.
Following the meeting, Kani stated that the main purpose of his visit was to express his gratitude and appreciation to the Lebanese people and government for their participation in the funeral ceremonies of the Iranian president and foreign minister who were both killed in a helicopter crash last month in Iran.
He also emphasized that the close ties between Iran and Lebanon are a key indicator of regional stability.
"We always consult with Lebanon regarding developments in the region. Iran has spared no effort to support stability in Lebanon and ensure the welfare of its people. There is cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Lebanon. Iran has always sought to achieve security and stability in Lebanon and promote progress and prosperity for the Lebanese people." Kani said. "Resistance is the cornerstone of stability in the region, and we agreed on an initiative to hold an emergency meeting of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to take collective steps aimed at stopping Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip."
For his part, the Lebanese foreign minister stated that he had reiterated Lebanon's stance against the ongoing war during his meeting with Kani, stressing that he had also explained Lebanon’s vision for sustainable solutions that restore calm and stability through a comprehensive approach to implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
"We discussed the necessity of ending the war in Gaza, as the ongoing crimes against Palestinians undermine peace prospects in the region,” Bou Habib told reporters.
Kani is also expected to meet Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah.
