Iran Fires Ballistic Missiles at Israel in Response to Syria Consulate Attack

Iran has fired ballistic missiles at targets inside Israel, Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported early Sunday.

“An informed source told IRNA that the first batch of Iranian ballistic missiles has been fired at targets deep within [Israel],” the agency said.

Earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that a drone and missile attack was underway against Israel in retaliation for a deadly April 1 drone strike on its Damascus consulate.

“In response to the numerous crimes committed by the Zionist regime, including the attack on the consular section... the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired dozens of missiles and drones at specific targets inside the occupied territories (Israel),” state television quoted an IRGC statement as saying.

Operation Honest Promise is “being carried out with the approval of the Supreme National Security Council under the supervision of the General Staff of the Armed Forces,” the statement said.

Within minutes of the launch, the account on X of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei reposted his pledge that the “evil (Israeli) regime will be punished.”

Israel plans a “significant response” to the unprecedented Iranian drone salvo against it, top-rated Channel 12 TV quoted an unnamed senior Israeli official as saying early on Sunday.

The April 1 strike, which was widely blamed on Israel, leveled the Iranian consulate in Damascus and killed seven IRGC members, two of them generals.

Initial US intelligence assessed that the attack would take place overnight, but new information early Saturday pushed up that timeline, US officials told Al Arabiya English.

A US defense official told Al Arabiya English that the US military was postured to act if directed.

The US military shot down Iranian drone aircraft headed toward Israel, three US officials said, without disclosing how many drones were shot down or the precise locations.
