Amid the unprecedented escalation along the Lebanese-Syrian border, intense clashes broke out involving Syrian forces, the Hermel clans, and groups affiliated with "Hezbollah."
Sources close to the Zeaiter and Jaafar clans, among others, estimated the cost of these recent confrontations at $1.5 million, citing the heavy use of weaponry and mounting losses, according to An-Nahar.
This comes amid the absence of Baalbek-Hermel deputies and party officials from what is happening in their area, especially since some of them own homes and properties interlinked in the areas of conflict.
These clashes came as part of the new Syrian administration's efforts to assert control over border areas, raising fears of the confrontation spreading further.
The new Syrian authorities accused "Hezbollah" of launching attacks on Syrian security forces and supporting smuggling gangs across the border, according to the official Syrian news agency "SANA."
In an attempt to contain the situation, the Lebanese army dispatched military reinforcements to the Al-Qaa area after it was fired upon from the Syrian side.
The army command issued orders to its units to respond to sources of fire from Syrian territory.
Despite this, efforts for calming the situation are moving parallel to the tension, as Lebanese President Joseph Aoun agreed with his Syrian counterpart Ahmad Al-Shara on coordinating to control the situation and prevent targeting civilians.
