The people of Lebanon are marking five years since the Beirut port explosion of August 4, 2020 – a blast that has been described as one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history. The detonation pulverised the port, ruined vast sections of the city and was felt as far away as Cyprus. It also claimed the lives of more than 220 people, injured more than 7,000 more and left more than 300,000 homeless.

The families of the victims are still awaiting justice. Earlier this year the magistrate investigating the tragedy, Tariq Bitar, resumed his investigation, which had been suspended after politicians repeatedly intervened to derail it.

The health ministry in Gaza said on Saturday that at least 41,391 people have been killed in the war between Israel and Hamas, now in its 12th month.
The toll includes 119 deaths in the previous 72 hours, according to the ministry, which said 95,760 people have been wounded in the Gaza Strip since the war began on October 7.
