Kataeb Lawmaker Elias Hankach commented on the events that unfolded in the southern suburbs of Beirut this afternoon, particularly after security forces prevented an armed and masked group on motorcycles from heading towards Galerie Semaan.
He stated: "Today, we rely on the security forces, and all of Hezbollah’s desperate attempts to incite strife, escalate tensions, and wield its excess power internally are merely phases Hezbollah must go through before accepting the inevitable reality: it must surrender its weapons to the army and operate as a political party like any other. Flexing its muscles domestically serves no purpose."
Hankach's words came during an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio station.
"Who will bear responsibility for a 'Tayyouneh 2' scenario?" he asked.
Hankach emphasized that Hezbollah still believes it can impose its outdated concepts through blackmail. However, he warned that the previous era has ended, and there is now international interest in restoring political order in Lebanon, ensuring that all parties stand equally behind the security forces without arms and that Hezbollah functions solely as a political entity.
He added: "None of these maneuvers will yield any results. What we need is greater wisdom in handling the situation. All this blackmail surrounding the formation of the government will lead nowhere. We hope to avoid repeating the mistakes that brought us to this point—whether in the ministerial statement or the monopolization of any ministry by a sect or a party. Moreover, the Prime Minister-designate cannot be subjected to coercion."
Hankach addressed a message to the residents of Ain El Remmaneh and Jdeideh, as well as to Kataeb supporters, stating: "Those who reject violence and have made immense sacrifices to break free from its vicious cycle will call today for nothing but restraint and standing behind the security forces. We will not be dragged into any internal conflicts because we have a golden opportunity to put the country back on the right track. We refuse to slip into internal strife—strife that we know how it begins but never how it ends."
