Kataeb Lawmaker Elias Hankach believed that a dialogue cannot be held “to pass time and convince us of Hezbollah's candidate Sleiman Frangieh.”
"We have never refused any invitation for dialogue. We support every step to break the deadlock and any invitation for dialogue will be discussed with the Kataeb Political Bureau in coordination with our partners in the opposition,” Hankach said in an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio staton.
“Hezbollah imposed its presidential candidate Sleiman Frangieh, and the scenario of surrendering to the opponent's will is far from us. What we are doing is unifying the largest number of MPs around a specific candidate, and it would have been more appropriate for the other team to give up their candidate and turn towards a candidate acceptable to everyone,” he noted.
“We were able to coordinate with the opposition to unify around the name of Jihad Azour after several contacts and meetings to confront the policy of imposition,” he added.
Hankach believed that Lebanon needs the support of its friendly countries like the United States, France, Belgium, Sweden, and Germany, which are countries that have a significant impact on Lebanese politics, saying that Germany is one of the most supportive countries in terms of development in Lebanon, providing 543 million dollars last year.
“MP Fouad Makhzoumi proposed the initiative to visit friendly countries to Lebanon to break the presidential impasse, help uncover the truth about the Beirut port explosion, and open up new economic and diplomatic prospects for Lebanon. We are in contact with European countries, especially those in the European Union, regarding the refugee crisis, and a French MP has submitted a resolution project to help Syrian refugees return to their country,” he pointed out.
“We were able to achieve our goals in every country we visited and to slow down the French initiative,” he added.
“It is important to work over time to overcome the current deadlock in Lebanon. We support any initiative to save the constitution and implement the Taif Agreement. However, the other party is selective in choosing the laws to apply according to its interests,” he said.
“We do not have a preference for any federal or union system. The decentralization has been in our constitution for more than 30 years and we also suggested developing the system since 2008,” he concluded.
