France has warmly congratulated Joseph Aoun on his election as President of Lebanon, describing this development as a "historic and crucial moment" for the country's future and stability.
"This election must now be followed by the formation of a strong government, supporting the President of the Republic, capable of uniting the Lebanese people and addressing their aspirations and needs," the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
France called for a new government that would undertake reforms necessary for Lebanon’s economic recovery, stability, security and sovereignty, urging all Lebanese political leaders and authorities to commit to the sustainable recovery of the country.
"This election puts an end to two years of presidential vacancy that have weakened Lebanon and opens a new chapter for the Lebanese people," the French Ministry remarked, describing the development as a "reason for hope."
The French government highlighted the immediate importance of the election in facilitating the implementation of the recent ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel, reached on November 26, 2024.
"The election of a head of state will contribute to the country's stability and, in the immediate term, to the effective implementation of the ceasefire," the Ministry noted.
France reaffirmed its commitment to Lebanon's stability, emphasizing its role alongside the United States and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
"France is firmly committed to this effort, standing resolutely with its international partners to ensure peace and stability in the region," the statement concluded.
