Lebanon’s former central bank governor Riad Salameh was released on Friday after posting bail of $14 million and 5 billion Lebanese pounds, his lawyer confirmed.
Judge Jamal Hajjjar authorized the release following the payment and a routine review of the source of funds. Earlier in the day, Salameh’s legal representative, Mark Habka, completed the paperwork at the Beirut Justice Palace. By afternoon, the indictment chamber had received confirmation of the bail payment, and Salameh was freed from Bhannes Hospital, where he had been held under guard.
“This release was ordered by the indictment chamber in Beirut after we filed the required declaration,” Habka told reporters. “Judge Hajjjar conducted a legal verification of the bail money’s source, which is a routine procedure.”
Habka described the release as “a new chapter” in proceedings he said were built on fabrications and baseless allegations.
“We hope Governor Salameh will be tried strictly according to the law,” he added. “Starting next week, we will pursue legal action against anyone who breaches the confidentiality of the investigation or attempts to pressure the judiciary through populism.”
Salameh, who led the Banque du Liban for three decades, faces multiple domestic and international investigations into alleged corruption, embezzlement and money laundering.
