Kim Kardashian Accused of Cultural Appropriation over Kimono Trademark

Kim Kardashian has denied cultural appropriation accusations after using a Japanese word as a trademark for her new shapewear brand, Kimono Intimates.

Kardashian faced a wave of criticism on social media, as users condemned the association between kimonos and underwear, and considered that it constitutes cultural appropriation and undermines the traditional Japanese garment.

“I understand and have deep respect for the significance of the kimono in Japanese culture,” the reality TV star said in a statement to the New York Times, saying she wanted the name of her shapewear to "nod to the beauty and detail" that goes into a kimono.

"My solution wear brand is built with inclusivity and diversity at its core and I'm incredibly proud of what's to come,” she added, revealing that there she has no intention of changing the name of her brand.
