If peace is more than the mere absence of war, then a true ceasefire must be more than just a pause in the fighting. The truce agreed to a week ago between Israel and Hezbollah contained several vital elements that held out the promise of longer-term stability. Among these were Lebanese troops replacing Hezbollah fighters as the main armed force in the country’s south, and steps to elect a president within 60 days. Ceasefire breaches by Israel and Hezbollah are now jeopardising these important aims.

This past week, Israeli, Lebanese and American leaders were busy patting themselves on the back announcing the completion of an Israel-Lebanon ceasefire agreement. The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, crowed about Israel being victorious and now the unquestioned dominant force throughout the Middle East. Hezbollah declared a “divine victory” greater than the one they achieved in 2006. Aoun supporters are getting ready to meet the President of the Republic for the last time in front of the entrance to the Baabda Palace, or what they call it “People’s House,” at eleven o’clock this morning.
An official and popular farewell ceremony is organized.
Since the early hours of the morning, logistical preparations have been completed around Baabda Palace, where the "Free Patriotic Movement" supporters slept on last night.
They spent their night there, expressing their love and loyalty to "General" Michel Aoun, chanting the slogan "with you we continue."
Baabda Palace is witnessing security reinforcements, amid anticipation of a large public presence in hours.
