Education Minister Cancels Brevet Exams Amid Disrupted School Year

Lebanon will not hold official intermediate certificate examinations this year, Education Minister Rima Karami announced, confirming the cancellation of the Brevet exams and the adoption of school-based assessments instead.

The decision comes amid what Karami described as a disrupted and unstable academic year.

“School grades and in-school examinations will replace the official intermediate certificate exams this year," Karami said during a press conference.

She said the measure was intended to reflect the difficult conditions faced by students and schools, stressing that the education system must adapt without undermining academic standards.

She added that the current year “has not been a normal year,” noting the psychological and social pressures on students.

“I am a child of the civil war and I know what it means to live with anxiety, fear and instability,” she said.

The minister stressed that while flexibility was necessary, authorities were also mindful of preserving the credibility of Lebanon’s official educational certificates. She said any decisions regarding examinations must balance students’ realities with the need to maintain the value of national diplomas.

“We cannot move toward full cancellation in a way that would affect the value of this certificate,” she said.

Karami confirmed that the Ministry of Education had conducted a nationwide assessment of public secondary schools, many of which were used to host displaced families during recent crises. She praised school administrations for continuing to operate under difficult circumstances, saying some had achieved full completion of the curriculum in certain subjects.
