Central Bank of Lebanon Maintains Public Sector Salaries in USD

Central Council of Banque du Liban agreed to continue disbursing public sector salaries in US dollars at an exchange rate of 85,500 Lebanese pounds for at least the next two months.

This decision by the Central Council is based on the understanding that the 5% difference between the market exchange rate (90,000 Lebanese pounds) and the dollars provided by the Central Bank of Lebanon at 85,500 Lebanese pounds will alleviate the burden on the public sector.

In addition, the Central Bank of Lebanon does not consider this difference as a loss, as it takes into account the avoidance of putting pressure on the Lebanese pound in case salaries were disbursed in the market all at once to purchase dollars, which could potentially disrupt the exchange rate stability.
