Britney Spears has appeared to announce her first project since being released from her conservatorship - a part in an upcoming film.

The Slave 4 U singer told fans that she has joined the cast of a movie called The Idol, saying it is "guaranteed to have hits and a lot bright pics to put in my beautiful family's faces".

Spears did not give any more details about the project.

The Weeknd has previously said that he is part of an HBO show called The Idol, however it is not clear whether this is what Spears is referring to.

She wrote on Instagram, sharing a picture of cat: "I just shot a movie titled THE IDOL... it's guaranteed to have hits and a lot bright pics to put in my beautiful family's faces !!!!! I hope you guys are having a merry ole jolly time cause I sure am !!!!

"If I go quiet from time to time, you can catch me with this cat somewhere."

It's the latest in a string of her now-famous cryptic Instagram posts, which sparked speculation over the last year that she was not in control of her account.

Some fans believe her latest post was a dig at her family, rather than an announcement about her career.

This would not be the singer's first foray into the TV and film world, after appearing 2002 drama Crossroads, at the height of her pop fame.

She later went on to appear in shows like Will & Grace, How I Met Your Mother, and even Glee, where a character was named after her.

The Idol, which is a new HBO project co-created by The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye), is reportedly set amid the Los Angeles music scene, and is about a self-help guru and cult leader who gets into a relationship with an emerging singer.
