Actor Awarded $1.9 Million in Defamation Case

Oscar-winning actor Geoffrey Rush was granted over $1.9 million in damages after winning a defamation case against The Daily Telegraph which wrote accusing statements on Rush, as reported by SBS News.

He was previously awarded $600,00 during an April ruling in the same case.

The Australian newspaper had published allegations that Rush had inappropriately touched his co-star, Eryn Jean Norvill, chased her into a bathroom and harassed her with inappropriate text messages during a King Lear production in Sydney between 2015 and 2016.

Norvill maintained her claims while Rush denied the allegations.

"This was a recklessly irresponsible piece of sensational journalism of the worst kind," federal court Judge Justice Wigney said of two articles published about Rush in 2017.
