Ceasefire Monitoring Committee Suspends Meetings Until February

Meetings of the ceasefire monitoring “mechanism” overseeing the Lebanon-Israel front have been suspended this month and postponed until February, amid uncertainty over the committee’s composition and leadership, ministerial sources told Asharq Al-Awsat.

The sources said the pause is linked to the absence of the US general who heads the committee and is currently outside Lebanon, as well as the need to appoint a civilian representative to replace US envoy Morgan Ortagus, who has been relieved of her duties.

“We are awaiting the return of the US general who is abroad, as well as the appointment of a civilian representative to replace Morgan Ortagus,” the sources said.

The committee last met on January 7, with discussions held exclusively at the military level and without civilian participation. The interruption has fueled questions over the future shape and role of the mechanism, which was established to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire and address violations along the border.

According to the ministerial sources, the committee is expected to resume work next month, likely reverting to its previous format as a strictly military body tasked with handling security and operational matters.
