Battling the Odds: Lebanon's Health Sector Resilience Amid Ongoing Conflict

Following the latest health developments amid ongoing hostilities, Director of Medical Care at the Lebanese Ministry of Health Dr. Joseph Al-Helo emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the health sector by the laws of warfare.

In an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio station, he highlighted the resilience and readiness of the health sector despite the escalation of conflict.

He noted the inauguration of the emergency and burn unit at the Turkish hospital, staffed by Lebanese doctors and volunteer physicians from abroad.

Al-Helo confirmed that infectious diseases remain under control in shelter centers, with medication being distributed by the Ministry of Health.

He stated, "International organizations cover 20% of the healthcare costs for displaced persons, while the Ministry of Health shoulders the remaining 80%."

Lebanon's Head of the Hospital Owners Syndicate Sleiman Haroun pointed out that the intensive care unit faces challenges, particularly for patients needing artificial ventilation, due to a shortage of personnel and the financial strain required to expand the number of critical care beds.
