The Weeknd went into the 2021 Billboard Music Awards as the most-nominated musician, so is it really any surprise he walked away from the latest ceremony as the artist who ended up collecting the most trophies?
The Canadian R&B/pop superstar snagged an impressive 10 Billboard Music Awards at this year’s showing from the famed music magazine and charts company. He was named Top Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist in addition to his many other honors, with most coming to him in the R&B fields. The chart-topper came out on top in so many areas thanks to his latest album After Hours and his generation-defining hit single “Blinding Lights,” which earned a trio of trophies itself.
Coming in second place among all acts with half as many Billboard Music Awards as The Weeknd was Pop Smoke, who unfortunately won his prizes posthumously. After his passing, the rapper’s career exploded, and he was named Best New Artist while his debut album Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon collected Top Billboard 200 Album.
Two other artists tied one another for the third-most wins at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, with Spanish-language powerhouse Bad Bunny and K-pop sensations BTS both coming out on top in four fields. The former act dominated in the Latin arenas (obviously), while the South Korean all-male vocal act enjoyed their best year yet, winning Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist, the fan-voted Top Social Artist and Top Selling Song for their international earworm “Dynamite.”
