Aoun Leaves Baabda, Enters Lebanon Into a Government Vacuum

Aoun delivered his last speech from Baabda in front of popular crowds from Free Patriotic Movement who gathered in Palace vicinity to bid the President Farewell.

“I signed government resignation decree in accordance with my powers, and today is an important end, not a farewell. You are with me, and I am with you. Today, we end a stage to begin a new one which requires struggle,” he stated.

Aoun pointed out that the country was robbed and that his party would do a lot of work and deploy a lot of effort in a bid to fight corruption.

“We could not take the Central Bank Governor to court, so who is protecting him and who is his partner? All of them have participated in the ruling system for 32 years and have led us to this situation. The country needs reform in order to survive,” he continued.

He also considered that State institutions were worn out because those in charge of them were afraid of a stick that would threaten them.

“We conducted a forensic investigation, but it was not implemented by the judiciary,” he added.

Aoun confirmed that the country shall be based on two pillars, which are security and judiciary referring that innocent people were in prison because the head of the Judicial Council would not appoint someone to look into their case.

“The judiciary is not achieving its tasks, and perpetrators are still outside courts, perhaps because they are subordinate to rulers,” he concluded.

Aoun is leaving Baabda Palace today, after 6 ruling years of crisis and struggles.

He was elected on Oct. 31, 2016, after 30-month-long presidential vacuum.
