Amnesty International Decries the Treatment of Female Lawmakers in Lebanese Parliament

Amnesty International on Wednesday decried the treatment of female lawmakers in the Lebanese parliament, particularly those who express disapproval of the government.

“They are harassed by their male counterparts and by the Speaker of the Parliament himself simply because they are women in a Parliament dominated by men,” Amnesty International tweeted.

“Representatives must accept responsibility for ending these assaults against women and the promotion of a hostile environment for them, in particular Speaker Nabih Berri,” it added.

It further stated that the Parliament must uphold human rights and implement the law dated 2020 that criminalizes harassment illegal in Lebanon.

Law #205 dated December 2020, was passed by the Lebanese Parliament. It is a landmark law against sexual harassment that provides protections to both victims and witnesses who testify against perpetrators.
