Al-Rahi Calls for Prioritizing Lebanon's Interests Above All

Maronite Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi said "Our people pray to God for Lebanon's salvation from war and for the election of a president of the republic, who is the sole constitutional guarantor of the unity of the Lebanese people. He alone restores to the parliament its lost legislative authority, and to the resigned executive authority its powers in administration, appointments, and other matters."

In his Sunday sermon he mentioned that on September 7, 1989, Pope John Paul II wrote a letter to all the bishops of the Catholic Church regarding the situation in Lebanon. In it, it was stated that "Lebanon is more than a country: it is a message of freedom and a model of pluralism for both the East and the West."

"The absence of Lebanon is undoubtedly one of the greatest wounds to the world's conscience," he added.

Al-Rahi called on the Lebanese officials to prioritize the country's interests above all.

"Lebanon cannot be manipulated, whatever the hidden reasons behind the failure to elect a president for it, even after a tenure exceeding a hundred years. The failure to elect a president violates the covenant of coexistence at the level of the parliament and the government and their legitimacy in their practice in the absence or absence of a Christian president, as the preamble to the constitution states that "there is no legitimacy for any authority that contradicts coexistence," he noted.
