France Says It Won’t Honor ICC Warrant for Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is immune from prosecution at the International Criminal Court, the French foreign ministry said on Wednesday, declaring it will not abide by arrest warrants issued by the Hague against Israelis.

In a statement, the ministry reaffirmed its commitment to international justice, but also says that the Israeli leader is covered by immunity rules that apply to states that are not a party to the ICC. Israel is not an ICC member.

“Such immunities apply to Prime Minister Netanyahu and other relevant ministers and will need to be taken into consideration should the ICC request their arrest and surrender,” the ministry said.

Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant are wanted by the ICC on war crimes allegations. Both Israel and the US have dismissed the case as spurious.
